New works by Mexican Realist Santiago Corral magnify the intimate details of his immediate surroundings. His home serves as a sanctuary of inspiration for images of antiqued furniture, decorative chocolates, and glimpses of curious children. This seemingly mundane subject matter is brought to life with Corral’s keen attention to detail and illumination of light and shadow.

The passage of time is suggested in each work- marked by images such as suitcases, disheveled purses, along with fleeting human gestures. More often than not, the works provoke questions pertaining to a larger narrative- allowing the viewer to fill in the blanks.

Although self-taught, Corral comes from a long line of artists in his family.
Surrounded by the art of his mother, grandfather, and brother, Corral had no lack of guidance as an artist. His influences span from the great masters such as Goya, Velasquez, and Joaquin Sorolla to contemporary realists such as Gerhard Richter, Antonio Lopez Garcia, and Lucien Frued. It is difficult to place Corral’s work into any specific era, as his imagery reflects a classic style that spans almost a century.
