Boyd Gavin has been a presence in the Northern California art scene since his 1975 solo debut, at the age of 16, at the Crocker Art Museum. Gavin is one of the few mid career artists who is closely associated with the region's first generation of influential painters, including Wayne Thiebaud, Greg Kondos, Jack Ogden and Jerald Silva (two early mentors), as well as Richard Diebenkorn and Elmer Bischoff. In these artists, Gavin identified with the respectful and reserved approach toward the subject, an attitude that he projects in his own compositions. The manner in which he both captures the reality of age and beauty, while retaining the dignity of each subject, however, is distinctly his own. Paintings of flowers, fruit, glass containers, newspapers and crayons are among his most charming compositions. Most readily apparent in these works is a sense of time, of the temporal aspects of nature. His attention to even the most insignificant objects is one of the most interesting aspects of Gavin's works.
