Viewing a Douglas Schneider painting is like taking a journey through layers of beauty, intrigue, and memory. A master of duality through combining images and styles of painting, Schneider plays with seeming opposites while creating a synergic effect within the viewer, allowing us to transcend from spectator to passenger: an armchair that threatens to break the two dimensional restrictions of traditional painting floats atop a layered background of abstract expressionism; objects touching on vintage Americana are brought sharply into focus through their juxtaposition atop backgrounds of raw expressionistic brushwork. First drawn to the delicate features of the objects in the foreground, often with a vintage and eclectic feel, the viewer is constantly being drawn deeper into backgrounds of expertly combined colors and brushstrokes. Using photos and film to subjectively mirror history Schneider deconstructs images to illuminate our own visual memory. Schneider uses a process that is both conceptual and improvisational and guided by intuition and memory. Schneider’s work is featured in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as well as several other collections throughout the country.
