Gilles Marrey
Biography VideoThe influences for Marrey’s color schemes run as far back and a field as Pompeii wall paintings. Indeed, sometimes understated, sometimes confrontational, his color schemes are what set his work apart. Marrey says that when he changes his subject or style, he changes the color. The foremost pleasure in painting comes from color for him. It is not an intellectual but a sensual pleasure, like a rush.
In contrast, Marrey’s subject matter seems starkly analytical. From the often-desolate cityscapes to the always personal anthropological images, they can evoke Edward Hopper-like soberness. His train stations and streets stand nearly deserted. Only a few brave souls dare venture into these usually public spaces. Even the Eiffel Tower looks somehow inaccessible.
Marrey’s cafe scenes, often emphasize the lone individual. ‘I perhaps think of loneliness, but not in a sad sense, more philosophically.’ Customarily incorporating family members as models, Marrey instills an intimate sensation. He wants people to look at his paintings and feel what he feels about these people.”
