Maria Luisa Campoy
Biography Video
The extraordinary sculptures by Maria Luisa Campoy demonstrate her endless creative vision and skilled craftsmanship. Campoy was born in Málaga in the Andalusian region of Spain. Andalusia is known as a melting pot in Spain- said to have a magical energy that breeds artistic expression. The whimsical, fantastic themes within Campoy’s sculptures are evidence of this inexplicable energy derived from her childhood. Beyond the realm of fantasy, Campoy is inspired by Spain’s many artifacts including art of the Middle Ages, Africa, Iberian idols, as well as Greek and Roman art. With formal training as an archeologist, Campoy had first hand contact with these historical artifacts. Campoy’s work stands out among the multitude of skilled bronze artists in Spain. Her playful themes take on a burlesque quality, while her antiqued patinas and eloquent sculpting command a serious tone. The interplay between these contrasting qualities makes for a truly enigmatic display, validating these genuine works of art.
