Listening to the Light

This painting, Listening to the Light, reflects a synesthetic response—listening to something visual, a celebration of light along the beach. The inspiration came during a residency in New Zealand, shortly before lockdown. On the volcanic west coast, the dark silica sand shimmered in summer sunlight, sparkling with a metallic, almost blue effervescence. Capturing that sense of brilliance, that play of light, became central to the work.
Equally important is the energy of what is absent. The spaces between are as vital as the painted marks, echoing the Japanese art of Ikebana, where emptiness carries weight and rhythm. Here, perspective emerges through the flow of brushwork: marks ascending, growing finer, sparser, less busy—suggesting both rhythm and depth, and inviting the viewer into a meditative awareness of light, space, and presence.
