This painting, There You Go, comes from a series made during a trip to Scotland, looking out over the Isle of Mull last October. The work captures the afterglow of sunset—the sun already gone, yet its colors refracted upward, brushing the undersides of clouds with light. That subtle interplay of space, twilight, and the quiet arrival of night is at the heart of the painting.

Built with thick swathes of oil and wax applied by palette knife, the surface is sculpted as much as painted. This physicality—the sense of the work being constructed, almost lifted off the canvas—is central to my practice and to the energy of the piece.
