This is a painting titled Twilight Storm. It's an oncoming, brooding sky storm that has reminiscences of an El Greco sky—those kinds of dramatic skies that often influenced me in the mid to late 1980s. You have this really dramatic, almost pulling slipstream of clouds coming from the horizon, catching the setting sun. It’s really quite daunting and quite threatening. Underpinning all of that is my love of the materiality of paint and what it can do in a visceral, almost edible way—smothered onto the canvas, scraped across, wiped off with turpentine rags, and sprayed with solvent, gold and silver solvent. All of that gives a luminosity and a kind of three-dimensional sheen to it.
The space in the painting is really important—it has this dramatic verticality, almost a perspective that pulls you down to the ground. There’s a sense of horizon that’s hinted at, but doesn’t quite enter the painting. It’s a really fine line between abstract and figurative, which I really enjoy.
