FERNANDO & VICENTE ROSCUBAS

Each work by the Roscubas brothers has a distinctive color scheme, some more minimal, others displaying a myriad of colors- creating a truly mesmerizing design.

The Roscubas brothers, Fernando and Vicente, identical twins based in Bilbao Spain, have been collaborating for over 30 years on a number of artistic endeavors. In the U.S. they have become widely known for their commanding totem sculptures. The totems, ranging from 4–7 feet in height, embody a modern take on ancient forms; conjuring up memories of African masks, as well as the totems of Easter Island, and other ancient cultures. A modern sensibility is derived through their clean lines of precisely layered wood slices.

The Roscubas brothers are interested in facial expression, its interior, silence, and look, everything that a being projects. They believe, the face is the place where this manifests to the greatest extent. Each totem captures a similar face yet in varying sizes and color schemes. There is an element of distortion in the clean lines and precise construction of these works command a serious tone.
