Gilles Marrey

Parisian artist Gilles Marrey is known for his deeply observed scenes of contemporary life, ranging from domestic interiors to urban and suburban landscapes—the kinds of quotidian places that are often seen but rarely examined. In his most recent exhibition, “Sunset Road,” Marrey uses his atmospheric palette, full of moody violets, oranges, blues and pinks, to dazzling effect, infusing residential streets, beaches, skylines, alleyways, even utility lines crossing the sky, with quiet but potent drama.

Biography

Parisian artist Gilles Marrey is known for his deeply observed scenes of contemporary life, ranging from domestic interiors to urban and suburban landscapes—the kinds of quotidian places that are often seen but rarely examined. In his new exhibition, “Sunset Road,” Marrey uses his atmospheric palette, full of moody violets, oranges, blues and pinks, to dazzling effect, infusing residential streets, beaches, skylines, alleyways, even utility lines crossing the sky, with quiet but potent drama.

Marrey’s interest in American landscapes traces back to the early 1990s, when he lived in New York as a young artist. Later, during a visit to San Francisco, he encountered the work of Richard Diebenkorn, whose innovative use of perspective and geometry in capturing the Bay Area’s rugged topography became an important influence. Marrey has since made a number trips to the U.S. to travel and paint, visiting Virginia, Oregon, Illinois, and points between, always on the lookout for strange and beautiful intersections between the built environment and natural world.

Studying art in France during the 1980s, when postmodernism and minimalism reigned supreme, Marrey forged his own path, embracing his love of earlier figurative artists like Gaugin, Vuillard, and Manet along with contemporaries who were exploring a grittier form of realism, such as Eric Fischl. Throughout his development, a commitment to realism has been a through-line—not merely recording what things look like on the surface, but scooping up the full character of a place. As French philosopher and critic Yves Michaud has written, Marrey’s paintings represent an “engulfment in the real.”

Marrey has exhibited his work throughout France, including recent solo exhibitions at the Mamut Art Center and Museum of Beaux Arts, Rouen, as well as internationally. For many years, he has been a professor at the Beaux-Arts de Paris and the National School of Architecture in Paris-Belleville.
