Sculptor Martha Sturdy draws inspiration from the natural landscape of British Columbia, where she lives and works north of Vancouver. Her practice reflects a deep engagement with the textures and rhythms of the land, translating these observations into bold, elemental forms.

Working in brass, wood, steel, and resin, Sturdy balances organic intuition with refined craftsmanship. Her sculptures explore the tension between simplicity and complexity—clean geometric forms offset by richly tactile surfaces. From cascading brass and charred cedar structures to brightly colored resin compositions, her work moves between raw materiality and a sense of optimism and play.

Long recognized for her contributions to both design and sculpture, Sturdy’s large-scale works mark a return to her roots while continuing her exploration of form and material. She has received numerous honors, including an honorary doctorate from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and induction into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, with permanent installations in Vancouver and Tokyo.
