Materials that have a life, enrich the work, give a different reading and make it deeper
Tom Fruin was born in Los Angeles and moved to New York after obtaining his BA at the University of California, Santa Barbara. While in New York, Fruin began to use found objects to create mixed media artworks, evolving into the use of reclaimed plexiglass to create his ICON series. Fruin transforms overlooked and mundane urban infrastructural shapes into colorful icons that give new perspectives to familiar sites. Using reclaimed materials ensures that the artwork is created from the fabric of the city itself.
Fruin's largest installation to date, the Watertower series, is installed on multiple rooftops across New York City and around the country. Other large scale work has been exhibited in public venues in Prague, Vienna, Copenhagen, South Korea, and throughout the United States.
